Gold, silver and oil ETFs: what they hold
Commodity ETFs give exposure to raw materials through a stock-exchange listing, but they do it in very different ways. This page groups five funds: two gold funds (GLD and IAU), a silver fund (SLV), an oil fund (USO) and a gold-miners fund (GDX). What each fund actually holds explains why their prices do not always move together.
Physically backed: GLD, IAU and SLV
GLD and IAU hold gold bullion in vaults, and SLV holds silver bullion. Their value follows the LBMA gold or silver price, less the trust's expenses, which are paid by selling small amounts of metal over time. Because GLD and IAU both own gold, their percentage moves are usually very close; their share prices differ only because each share represents a different amount of gold. Where our sources agreed, GLD's expense ratio is 0.40% a year, IAU's 0.25% and SLV's 0.50%.
Futures-based: USO
USO does not store oil. It holds WTI crude oil futures contracts and rolls them before they expire. When later contracts cost more than nearer ones, each roll costs money, so over time USO's return can be quite different from the change in the spot oil price. We do not show an expense ratio for USO because our sources disagreed.
Company shares: GDX
GDX holds shares of gold-mining companies, not gold. Miners' profits are very sensitive to the gold price, so their shares often move more than the metal, and they also carry company risks such as rising costs, production problems and swings in the wider stock market. GDX shows an expense ratio of 0.51%.
Gold in Gulf currencies
These funds trade in US dollars on US exchanges. For the gold price per gram in UAE dirhams, Saudi riyals and other Gulf currencies, see our gold price page; for live Brent and WTI prices, see the oil page.
