What sector ETFs hold
Sector ETFs focus on one part of the economy instead of the whole market. The four Select Sector SPDR funds on this page each hold the S&P 500 companies in one sector: XLK (technology), XLE (energy), XLF (financials) and XLV (health care). Two semiconductor funds narrow the focus to a single industry: SMH follows the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index of 25 large chip companies, and SOXX follows the NYSE Semiconductor Index.
Why sectors move differently
Sectors respond to different forces. Energy companies are tied to oil and gas prices; banks and insurers to interest rates and credit conditions; health care to drug approvals, patents and pricing policy; technology and chipmakers to demand cycles, investment spending and expectations for future growth. On any given day one sector can rise while another falls, and the heat map on this page shows those differences at a glance.
Concentration
Because a sector index only holds companies from one sector, a few large companies can make up a big share of the fund. That makes sector ETFs more concentrated, and often more volatile, than broad index funds such as SPY or VTI. Semiconductor funds are especially concentrated: the industry is cyclical and a small number of very large companies carry much of its weight.
Costs
Where our sources agreed, XLK, XLE, XLF and XLV each show an expense ratio of 0.08% a year, and SMH 0.35%. We do not show a figure for SOXX because the numbers we found did not match.
