About SOXL
SOXL (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X) is a leveraged semiconductor ETF from Direxion. It aims to deliver 3× the daily percentage change of the NYSE Semiconductor Index, for a single day only. Its expense ratio is 0.75% a year, according to both the issuer and Yahoo Finance's fund profile.
What it tracks
The NYSE Semiconductor Index follows US-listed companies that design, manufacture and sell semiconductors and chip-making equipment, so SOXL is a concentrated position in one industry rather than in the broad market.
What to keep in mind
Because the 3× target applies to each day on its own, SOXL's return over a week or a month is usually not three times the index's return over the same period. Chip stocks already swing more than the broad market, and leverage magnifies those swings in both directions. SOXL split its shares 15-for-1 in March 2021; the returns shown here are adjusted for that.
How the daily reset works
A leveraged or inverse ETF rebalances at the end of every trading day so that it starts the next day with the target exposure again. That is why its return over any period longer than one day depends on the path the index took, not just where it ended. Example: if an index rises 10% and then falls 10%, it is down 1% (1.10 × 0.90); a 3× fund rises 30% and then falls 30%, ending down 9% (1.30 × 0.70) before fees. The more the index swings, the bigger this gap becomes. Issuers describe these funds as intended for short holding periods.
