What index ETFs track

Index ETFs aim to follow a published market index one-for-one, before fees, by holding the stocks in it or a representative sample of them. They are not leveraged: if the index rises 1% in a day, the fund should rise by close to 1%. This page covers six widely traded US index funds built on five benchmarks.

The benchmarks

The S&P 500 (SPY and VOO) covers about 500 large US companies weighted by market value. The Nasdaq-100 (QQQ) holds 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, with a heavy tilt toward technology. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) holds 30 blue-chip companies and is price-weighted, so higher-priced shares carry more weight. The Russell 2000 (IWM) covers small-cap US companies, and the CRSP US Total Market Index (VTI) spans nearly the whole investable US stock market, from the largest companies to micro-caps.

Same index, different funds

SPY and VOO follow the same index, so their percentage moves are usually almost identical; the differences are mainly cost and fund structure. On the expense ratios we could confirm, SPY charges 0.0945% a year and VOO 0.03%. IWM shows 0.19%, DIA 0.16% and VTI 0.03%. We do not show a figure for QQQ because our sources disagreed. Fees are taken from each fund's assets, so they are already reflected in its price.

Index funds and leveraged funds

Several leveraged funds on Invvex are built on the same indices: TQQQ and SQQQ on the Nasdaq-100, UPRO and SPXU on the S&P 500, and TNA on the Russell 2000. Comparing their daily moves with the 1× funds here shows how leverage multiplies a single day's move, and over longer periods how compounding pulls their returns away from a simple multiple. See the leveraged and inverse ETF page for how that works.

Risks to keep in mind

Tracking an index spreads risk across many companies but does not remove market risk: broad index funds can fall sharply in sell-offs and can take a long time to recover. Indices weighted by market value concentrate in their largest members, and narrower indices such as the Nasdaq-100 and the Dow Jones can behave quite differently from the total market.

About the data

Prices come from Yahoo Finance's regular US session and may be delayed; each quote shows its time. One-week, one-month and one-year returns on the fund pages are calculated from daily closes adjusted for share splits and do not include dividends.
