What it tracks

VOO tracks the S&P 500, an index of about 500 large US companies weighted by market value, which together make up a large share of the value of the US stock market.

What to keep in mind

VOO and SPY follow the same index, so their daily moves are usually almost identical; the main differences between them are cost and fund structure. VOO is not leveraged and can still fall sharply in broad market declines.

What an index ETF does

An index ETF buys the companies in its benchmark in roughly the same proportions, so its value moves with the index, minus fees and small tracking differences. There is no leverage and no daily reset, so returns over a week, a month or a year are close to the index's own return over that period. Spreading money across many companies reduces the impact of any single company, but the whole index can still fall in a broad market decline.
