About SPY

SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust) is a S&P 500 index ETF from State Street SPDR. It is not leveraged: it aims to follow its benchmark one-for-one. Its expense ratio is 0.0945% a year, according to both the issuer and Yahoo Finance's fund profile.

What it tracks

The S&P 500 covers about 500 large US companies weighted by market value, so the largest companies have the biggest effect on the fund. SPY, launched in 1993, is one of the oldest US-listed ETFs.

What to keep in mind

SPY is not leveraged, so its daily move should be close to the S&P 500's, minus fees. Like any stock fund it can fall sharply in market sell-offs: tracking an index spreads risk across many companies but does not remove market risk.

What an index ETF does

An index ETF buys the companies in its benchmark in roughly the same proportions, so its value moves with the index, minus fees and small tracking differences. There is no leverage and no daily reset, so returns over a week, a month or a year are close to the index's own return over that period. Spreading money across many companies reduces the impact of any single company, but the whole index can still fall in a broad market decline.

On this page

The SPY price above comes from the US regular trading session via Yahoo Finance and may be delayed; it updates automatically while this page is open. The chart switches between 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year, and the 1-week, 1-month and 1-year returns are price returns adjusted for share splits, not including distributions. The table below compares SPY with the other funds in the same category, and you can set a free price alert to be notified when SPY crosses a level you choose.
