What it tracks

The Dow Jones Industrial Average holds 30 large US blue-chip companies and is price-weighted: stocks with a higher share price carry more weight, regardless of company size.

What to keep in mind

With only 30 holdings, DIA is less diversified than an S&P 500 or total-market fund, and a big move in one high-priced stock can noticeably move the fund.

What an index ETF does

An index ETF buys the companies in its benchmark in roughly the same proportions, so its value moves with the index, minus fees and small tracking differences. There is no leverage and no daily reset, so returns over a week, a month or a year are close to the index's own return over that period. Spreading money across many companies reduces the impact of any single company, but the whole index can still fall in a broad market decline.
