What it tracks

The CRSP US Total Market Index covers nearly the entire investable US stock market, from the largest companies to mid, small and micro caps, so VTI holds far more stocks than an S&P 500 fund.

What to keep in mind

Because large companies dominate by market value, VTI's daily moves are usually close to the S&P 500's; the extra mid and small caps add breadth rather than a different direction. It is not leveraged and still carries full stock-market risk.

What an index ETF does

An index ETF buys the companies in its benchmark in roughly the same proportions, so its value moves with the index, minus fees and small tracking differences. There is no leverage and no daily reset, so returns over a week, a month or a year are close to the index's own return over that period. Spreading money across many companies reduces the impact of any single company, but the whole index can still fall in a broad market decline.
