About XLK

XLK (Technology Select Sector SPDR) is a technology sector ETF from State Street SPDR. It is not leveraged: it aims to follow its benchmark one-for-one. Its expense ratio is 0.08% a year, according to both the issuer and Yahoo Finance's fund profile.

What it tracks

The Technology Select Sector Index holds the information-technology companies in the S&P 500, such as software, hardware and semiconductor makers.

What to keep in mind

Sector funds are concentrated by design, and a few very large companies can make up a big part of this index, so XLK can swing more than the broad market.

What a sector ETF does

A sector ETF holds companies from a single part of the economy. That makes it a way to follow one industry, such as technology, energy or banks, but it also means less diversification than a broad index fund: when the sector's own drivers turn, such as oil prices, interest rates, regulation or demand cycles, the whole fund feels it. A few very large companies can carry a big share of a sector index.

Thursday's New York cash session was a hard one for the Nasdaq Composite, the broad Nasdaq index. CBS News said it closed at 24315, down 1422 points, or 5.5%. That number is the Composite. It is not the Nasdaq 100, and it is not the QQQ fund. CNBC and CBS News said people were worried that, after the midterm elections, Washington could slow the building of the data centers behind artificial intelligence. In the same session CBS News said Nvidia fell 9.2% and AMD fell 17.3%.

What the articles said

  • CNBC and CBS News said investors were worried that the midterm results could slow the building of AI data centers.
  • CBS News quoted economists who tied that worry to possible new rules from Democrats in Congress. CNBC said technology shares led the drop while that worry was in the market.

This is not a recommendation. It does not treat the election coverage as the reason the index moved. The close, the point drop and the percent are the rounded figures the articles printed. They do not print an exact prior close.

The first list is how we read the articles. The second list is numbers and events those articles stated, each with a link and a time. They are not the same, and this note does not say they made the price move.

A live quote elsewhere on Invvex is a separate figure. The move in this note is only the one written above.

Friday's tech rebound sat next to rules that are not law

Investing.com carried a Reuters story datelined New York and London on 6 November 2026. The page says it was published on 6 November 2026 at 16:05 and updated on 7 November 2026 at 02:10. It does not name that clock's time zone. The story says that on Friday the S&P 500 rose 0.31%, the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1%, and the Dow fell 0.46%, and that all three still logged weekly losses after Thursday's drop. It says the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was up 4.2% and Nvidia rose nearly 3%. It frames the rebound around worry that Democratic election wins could bring tighter US rules for AI and data centres. The only concrete step it describes is a promise to introduce state laws. No enacted text was obtained for this note.
