Forex trading for beginners: how to trade forex, step by step

Forex is the market for trading currencies, the largest financial market in the world by turnover. Here is how it works, the terms you need, and how to start safely from the UAE.

How currency trading works

Currencies trade in pairs such as EUR/USD: the first is the base, the second the quote. You buy if you expect the base to rise against the quote, sell if you expect the opposite. Retail traders usually trade through a broker via CFDs or spot FX, without taking delivery.

Key terms

Pip: the usual smallest move, 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs. Lot: 100,000 units (standard), 10,000 (mini), 1,000 (micro). Leverage and margin: leverage lets you open a position larger than your balance; margin is the amount set aside. Spread: the gap between bid and ask.

Market hours in UAE time

Forex runs 24 hours from Monday morning to Friday night, moving through Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. The London–New York overlap in the UAE evening is usually the most active. The Invvex sessions tool shows what is open now.

The dirham and Gulf currencies

The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 per US dollar, as are the Saudi and Qatari riyals, so USD/AED barely moves; Gulf traders mostly trade the majors and gold.

What moves currencies

Over weeks and months, interest rates matter most: a currency tends to strengthen when its central bank is expected to raise rates relative to others, and weaken when cuts are expected. Inflation, jobs and growth data feed those expectations, which is why releases such as US non-farm payrolls and CPI can move every dollar pair within seconds. Risk sentiment matters too: in stressful markets money often flows to the dollar, the yen, the Swiss franc and gold.

Day to day, prices also react to positioning and technical levels. The Invvex economic calendar lists every scheduled release in UAE time, and the daily analysis covers gold, oil and the main indices before each session.

How to trade forex: a first trade, step by step

Pick one liquid pair, such as EUR/USD, and one timeframe. Decide your reason to buy or sell, for example a pullback to support in an uptrend. Place the stop-loss where that idea is wrong, then work out the position size so the loss at the stop is a small, fixed share of your account; the Invvex calculator does the arithmetic. Set a target or exit rule, enter, and write the trade in a journal with the reason, the result and what you would do differently.

Two habits matter more than any entry method: never trade without a stop-loss, and never increase size to win back a loss.

Common beginner mistakes

Using too much leverage, trading too many pairs at once, moving the stop-loss further away when a trade goes wrong, trading through major news without a plan, and following anonymous signal channels. Each of these is avoidable with a written plan and small sizes.

Learning forex in the UAE

You do not need a paid course to start. The Invvex Academy is a free, structured course from beginner to advanced, with lessons on pips and lots, leverage, order types, charts and risk, plus a separate technical analysis track. Many UAE-licensed brokers also run free webinars and seminars. Be wary of courses sold with promises of income or tied to opening an account with one specific broker.

How to start

Learn the basics in the Invvex Academy, open a demo with a broker that holds a UAE dealing licence, write a simple plan with your stop-loss and risk per trade, then start small. Leveraged trading is high-risk and most retail accounts lose money.
