Gold trading: a practical guide for traders in the UAE
"Trading gold" can mean buying a bar from a shop or opening an XAU/USD position with a broker. The risks and costs are very different. This guide explains each route.
Three ways to trade gold
Physical gold: you own it, with no leverage or swaps, but pay a buy/sell spread and possibly making charges, and need safe storage. Gold CFDs (XAU/USD): you trade the price move, usually with leverage and overnight swaps. Futures and ETFs: exchange-traded exposure through a broker with access to those markets.

Gold trading in the UAE
All of these are legal in the UAE. Use a broker licensed by the CMA, DFSA or FSRA. Dubai shop prices per gram in AED are derived from the global USD ounce price by karat, plus making charges; with the dirham pegged at 3.6725 per dollar, the AED gram price moves almost exactly with XAU/USD.
What moves gold
The US dollar, US yields and rate expectations, geopolitics and safe-haven demand. US jobs and inflation data and Fed decisions often bring the biggest moves; the London–New York overlap, in the UAE evening, is usually the most active time.
The XAUUSD spread and other costs
The spread on XAU/USD is the gap between the buy and sell price, usually quoted in cents or dollars per ounce. It is not fixed: it tends to be tightest in the London and New York sessions and wider in the Asian hours, around the daily rollover and around major US data. Some accounts quote a raw spread and charge a commission per lot instead. Compare the full cost, spread plus commission plus swap, on the account type you would actually use, at the hours you would actually trade.
Choosing a gold broker, platform and account
A good XAUUSD broker for UAE residents holds a UAE dealing licence (CMA, DFSA or FSRA), publishes its gold contract size, trading hours and margin, and lets you deposit and withdraw in AED to a UAE bank. Most brokers offer gold on MetaTrader 5 or MT4 and on their own app; some also on cTrader or TradingView. A gold trading account is usually just a normal trading account: check the minimum trade size (often 0.01 lots, which is one ounce at most brokers), the leverage applied to gold, and whether a swap-free version is available if you need one.
Costs and risks
Spread, sometimes commission, and swaps. At most brokers one gold lot is 100 ounces, so a $1 move is $100 per lot. Start very small, use a stop-loss and check the margin with the calculator. Most retail CFD accounts lose money.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to start trading gold?
It depends on the broker and position size; some UAE-licensed brokers have no minimum deposit. Use an amount you can afford to lose and trade small sizes.
Why is the Dubai gold price different from XAU/USD?
XAU/USD is the USD price per ounce; the Dubai price is per gram in AED by karat, derived from it, with making charges added by shops.
When is the best time to trade gold?
Usually the London–New York overlap and around major US data, when liquidity and movement are highest, which also means higher risk.
