Multi-timeframe chart layouts and price alerts in TradingView and MT5

A good routine uses two things: a layout that shows the higher and lower timeframes side by side, and alerts at the prices that matter, so the platform tells you when to look. This guide shows how to set up both.

Several charts in TradingView

  1. Choose a grid. Click the Select Layout button in the top toolbar and choose a grid of two, three or four charts. How many charts you can show depends on your TradingView plan.
  2. Set each chart. Click a chart to make it active and set its timeframe: for example D1, H4 and H1 on the same symbol.
  3. Sync what should match. In the same layout menu you can sync the symbol, interval, crosshair, time and date range across charts. For a top-down layout, sync the symbol and crosshair but not the interval.
  4. Save the layout. Give the layout a name and press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac), or turn on Autosave. You can keep several layouts and switch between them.

Several charts in MT5

  1. Open one chart per timeframe. Right-click the symbol in Market Watch and choose Chart Window (or drag it onto the work area). Repeat, then set the charts to D1, H4 and H1.
  2. Arrange them. Use the Window menu to tile the open charts side by side.
  3. Save a template. Save the look of one chart (colours, indicators, drawings settings) as a template from the chart’s right-click menu → Templates, then apply it to the others.
  4. Save a profile. A profile saves the whole set of open charts. Save it from the File menu → Profiles and load it again whenever you start the platform.

Price alerts in TradingView

  1. Create the alert. Right-click the chart, a drawing or an indicator and choose Add alert…, or open the Alert manager in the right panel and create a new alert.
  2. Set the condition. Choose what is checked (price, a drawing or an indicator) and an operator such as Crossing, then the value. Alerts can also be set on drawings such as trend lines and horizontal lines.
  3. Choose how you are told. Pick the notifications you want, such as a pop-up, sound, email or a push notification to the TradingView app.

Price alerts in MT5

  1. Open the Alerts tab. Open the Toolbox window and go to the Alerts tab. Right-click inside it to create an alert from the context menu, or press Insert.
  2. Set the condition. Choose the symbol and a condition such as Bid > or Bid < a value (Ask, Last, Volume and Time conditions also exist).
  3. Choose the action. Choose Sound, File, Email or Notification. Push notifications to the MT5 mobile app need your MetaQuotes ID entered in the desktop settings.
  4. Limit repeats and test. Set an expiration, the timeout between repeats and the maximum number of iterations, then use Test to check the action works.
  5. Keep the terminal running. These alerts live in the desktop terminal on your computer, so keep it open and connected. The Time condition uses your computer’s local time.

Alerts from Invvex

  1. Use Invvex alerts for a simple heads-up. Invvex alerts send free email notifications for gold, forex and high-impact news. WhatsApp alerts are coming soon. They are a reminder to look at your chart, not a trade signal.

Common problems

The MT5 alert did not fire
The terminal was closed or disconnected, the alert had expired or reached its maximum iterations, or the condition used Bid when you meant Ask.
No push notification on my phone
Check that the MetaQuotes ID from the MT5 mobile app is entered in the desktop settings and that notifications are enabled, then press Test.
My TradingView layout lost its drawings
Make sure the layout was saved or Autosave is on, and that you opened the same named layout.

Frequently asked questions

Which timeframes belong together?

A common pairing is roughly four to six times apart, such as D1–H4–H1 or H4–H1–M15. The higher one sets the context and the lower one is for timing.

Are alerts a trading signal?

No. An alert means price reached a level you chose. You still check your plan before doing anything.

Do I need a paid TradingView plan?

Not for a single chart and a few alerts. The number of charts per layout and active alerts depends on the plan, so check the current plans on TradingView.
