MACD: crossovers, the histogram and lag

How MACD is built from two EMAs, what the signal line and histogram show, why zero-line and signal-line crossovers lag, and how to use MACD for momentum context. EUR/USD and Saudi Aramco (2222) examples.

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is built from moving averages, so everything you learned about their lag applies here too. With the standard settings (12, 26, 9):

  • the MACD line = EMA 12 − EMA 26 of price;
  • the signal line = EMA 9 of the MACD line;
  • the histogram = MACD line − signal line.

What each part tells you

  • Above or below zero: the 12 EMA is above or below the 26 EMA, a basic trend reading.
  • Signal-line crossover: the MACD line crossing its signal line shows momentum shifting. It reacts sooner than the zero line, and gives more false signals.
  • Histogram: shrinking bars show momentum slowing even while price still moves in the same direction.

Lag, measured

Each layer is an average of an average, so MACD crossovers come after the turn in price. That is fine for confirming that momentum has changed, but poor for picking tops and bottoms.

Worked example: EUR/USD, H4. The figure uses drawn prices. From a low at 1.0935, the MACD line crosses above zero 7 bars later. As the rally matures, the histogram peaks and starts shrinking well before price tops at 1.1095: momentum was fading. The MACD line crosses below its signal line 3 bars after the top, and below zero 12 bars after it, when price is already near 1.1015, about 80 pips below the high. Same indicator, very different timing depending on which crossover you watch.

Common misuse

  • Trading every signal-line cross in a range, where they come constantly.
  • Comparing MACD values across markets: they are in price units, so a reading on gold cannot be compared with one on EUR/USD.
  • Stacking MACD, RSI and a stochastic and calling it "confirmation": they are all built from the same closes.

This lesson is educational. MACD describes past momentum; its crossovers do not predict the next move.

🛠️ Practice task

Use a real chart. This is for practice, not for placing a trade.

  1. Open EUR/USD on H4 and add MACD (12, 26, 9). The Invvex EUR/USD page shows the current price.
  2. Mark the last two clear swing highs and lows on price.
  3. For each, count the bars until the signal-line cross and until the zero-line cross. Write down how far price had moved by then.
  4. Find one period where the histogram shrank while price still made new highs or lows. What happened next?
  5. Repeat on Saudi Aramco (2222) daily and compare the timing.

Saudi Aramco (2222), daily. Which letter marks the MACD line crossing above its signal line?

Show answer

B: MACD crossing above the signal line. The bullish signal-line cross is where the MACD line moves up through the signal line and the histogram turns positive: B. A is the later zero-line cross; C and D are the bearish crosses after the top.

✍️ Quick quiz

1. With standard settings, the MACD line is…

Show answer

EMA 12 − EMA 26. The 12 and 26 EMAs; the signal line is the EMA 9 of their difference.

2. The histogram shrinks while price is still rising. What does that suggest?

Show answer

Upward momentum is slowing. The histogram is the gap between MACD and its signal; a shrinking gap means momentum is fading. It is not a sell signal by itself.

3. Which crossover usually comes first after a top?

Show answer

The MACD line crossing below its signal line. The signal line follows MACD closely, so that cross comes sooner; the zero line needs the EMAs themselves to cross.

4. Why is MACD + RSI not truly independent confirmation?

Show answer

Both are calculated from the same closing prices. Two indicators of the same closes tend to agree. For independent evidence, look at structure, levels or volume.
