Volume: what it confirms and what it cannot

Use volume to judge breakouts and pullbacks, understand why spot forex and CFDs only show tick volume, and avoid reading too much into one bar. Saudi Aramco (2222) and gold examples.

⚠️ Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged forex are complex instruments with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Most retail accounts lose money. This content is education only, not investment advice or a recommendation.

Volume is the amount traded in each bar. It does not tell you direction on its own, but it helps you judge how much participation is behind a move. The key idea is relative volume: is this bar's volume high or low compared with recent bars?

Which volume are you looking at?

  • Exchange-traded stocks, such as Saudi Aramco (2222) on Tadawul, have real traded volume: the number of shares that changed hands.
  • Spot forex and most CFDs (EUR/USD, gold CFDs) have no central exchange. MT5 and TradingView show tick volume: the number of price changes on your broker's or data provider's feed. It often moves with activity, but it is not the amount traded, and it differs between brokers.
  • Futures (for example COMEX gold) have exchange volume, which some traders use as a reference for the spot market.

What volume can help confirm

  • Breakouts: a break through resistance with volume well above its recent average shows wide participation. A break on thin volume deserves more suspicion.
  • Pullbacks: in a healthy uptrend, pullbacks often come on lighter volume than the rallies.
  • Climaxes: a very large volume bar after a long move can mark exhaustion, but it can also be the start of acceleration. Wait for price to show you which.
Worked example: Saudi Aramco (2222.SR), daily, in riyals. The figure uses drawn prices and volume. Resistance sits near 25.60. First, one candle pokes to 25.72 and closes just above at 25.63, but its volume is below the 20-day average; the next day closes back at 25.36. That was a false break. Later, price closes through 25.60 on volume roughly twice the average, the following days keep it up, and the pullback to about 26.05 holds well above the old resistance. The second break had participation behind it; the first did not.

What volume cannot do

  • It cannot tell you direction by itself: a high-volume bar can be buying or selling.
  • One bar is not a trend. Compare with an average (many charts offer a volume moving average) and look at several bars.
  • Tick volume on forex can jump at session opens and news for reasons unrelated to your level.

This lesson is educational. Volume describes participation in past bars; it does not predict the next move.

🛠️ Practice task

Use a real chart. This is for practice, not for placing a trade.

  1. Open Saudi Aramco (2222) daily in TradingView and add the Volume indicator with its moving average. The Invvex 2222 page shows the current price.
  2. Mark a clear resistance or support zone and find the last two times price broke through it.
  3. For each break, compare the breakout bar's volume with the average. Write down what happened over the next five bars.
  4. Open gold (XAU/USD) in MT5 and switch on tick volume. Note when it spikes: session opens, news, or your level?
  5. Write one sentence on what volume added to your reading, and one on what it could not tell you.

Gold H1, level 3,950. Which candle is the breakout with the clearest volume confirmation?

Show answer

C: closes above the level on the highest volume. A breakout needs a close beyond the level, and participation behind it. C has both. A closes above but on thin volume, B has volume but closes back below (a rejection), and D is high volume away from the level, so it says nothing about the break.

1. What does MT5 show as "volume" on EUR/USD?

Show answer

Tick volume: the number of price changes on the feed. Spot forex has no central exchange, so platforms show tick volume, which differs between brokers.

2. Price breaks resistance on volume far below its 20-bar average. What is a reasonable reading?

Show answer

It deserves suspicion; wait for more evidence. Thin participation makes a false break more plausible. It is not proof, so you wait or plan accordingly.

3. In a healthy uptrend, pullbacks often come on…

Show answer

Lighter volume than the rallies. Lighter volume on pullbacks suggests sellers are not very active.

4. A single very large volume bar appears after a long rally. What does it tell you on its own?

Show answer

Not enough: it can be exhaustion or acceleration, so wait for price. Volume needs price context. Let the following bars show what the spike meant.
