Before any indicator, the chart already tells you something important: is price making higher swings, lower swings, or going sideways? This is market structure, and it is the base for everything else in this track.
Swing highs and swing lows
A swing high is a peak with lower highs on both sides; a swing low is a trough with higher lows on both sides. A simple rule many traders use: a swing needs at least two candles on each side that do not go beyond it. Pick one rule and use it every time, otherwise you will see swings wherever you want to.
Uptrend, downtrend, range
- Uptrend: higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL). Buyers keep pushing price above the last peak and defending a higher level each time.
- Downtrend: lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
- Range: highs and lows at roughly the same levels. Neither side is in control.
Break of structure (BOS)
When price in an uptrend moves beyond the last swing high, it breaks structure in the trend direction and confirms the trend is still alive. In a downtrend, a BOS is a break below the last swing low. Decide in advance whether a wick is enough or you need a candle close beyond the level; many traders use the close because wicks often poke through and come back.
Change of character (CHoCH)
A change of character is the first break against the trend: in an uptrend, a break below the last higher low. It is an early warning that the trend may be ending, not proof. Price often breaks a higher low and then continues up. Traders usually wait for more evidence, such as a lower high followed by a break of the new low.
Timeframes change the story
A downtrend on H1 can be a normal pullback inside a D1 uptrend. Always say which timeframe you mean: “H4 structure is bearish since the CHoCH at 3,933, D1 is still making higher lows.” The chart guide shows how to set up a multi-timeframe layout.
This lesson is educational. Structure describes what price has done; it does not tell you what price will do next.
🛠️ Practice task
Use a real chart. This is for practice, not for placing a trade.
- Open gold (XAU/USD) on the H4 timeframe in TradingView or your broker’s MT5. You can check the current price on the Invvex gold page.
- Using the two-candle rule, mark the last six swing points and label each one HH, HL, LH or LL.
- Mark the most recent BOS and write down the level whose break would be a CHoCH.
- Write one sentence: “H4 structure is … because …”. Then switch to D1 and write the same sentence for D1.
- Come back in two days and check how structure developed. Note what you would have misread.
