MT5 indicators and drawing tools: add, edit and remove them

MT5 comes with 38 built-in technical indicators and 46 analytical objects (lines, channels, Fibonacci, Gann and Elliott tools, shapes and arrows), according to the MetaTrader 5 Help. Indicators are calculated from price; objects are drawn by hand. This guide shows how to use both without cluttering the chart.

Add and set up an indicator

  1. Find it in the Navigator. Open the Navigator (View → Navigator) and expand Indicators. They are grouped as Trend, Oscillators, Volumes and Bill Williams.
  2. Put it on the chart. Drag the indicator onto the chart, or use Insert → Indicators. Some draw on the price chart (Moving Average); others open their own window below it (MACD, RSI).
  3. Set the parameters. In the window that opens, set the inputs such as Period and “Apply to” (Close, Open, High, Low, Median, Typical or Weighted Close). On the Levels tab add lines such as 70 and 30 for RSI.
  4. Change or remove it later. Right-click the indicator line → Properties, or open the Indicator List with Ctrl+I. Use Delete Indicator to remove it, or Delete Indicator Window to close its sub-window.

Draw lines, channels and Fibonacci

  1. Choose a tool. Pick it from the Line Studies toolbar or the Insert menu: trend line, horizontal line, equidistant channel, Fibonacci retracement and others.
  2. Place it. One-point objects (horizontal line, arrow, label) appear where you click. For a trend line, channel or Fibonacci, click the first point, hold the mouse button and drag to the second.
  3. Adjust it. Click the object to select it; drag the middle marker to move it and an end marker to reshape it. Right-click → Properties to change colour, style and, for Fibonacci, the levels.
  4. Show it only where it belongs. In the object's Properties → Visualization tab, choose the timeframes it appears on, so daily levels do not clutter a one-minute chart.

Tidy up

  1. Delete objects. Select an object and press Delete, or press Backspace to remove the last one you drew. Ctrl+B opens the Object List to see and delete everything on the chart.
  2. Undo a deletion. Press Ctrl+Z, or use Charts → Object → Undo Delete.
  3. Save the result. When the chart looks right, save it as a template (see the charts guide) so you can apply the same set to other symbols.

Common problems

The indicator window is empty
Some indicators need more history. Scroll the chart left to load more bars, or check the inputs (a very large Period draws nothing on a short chart).
I cannot select a line
By default objects are selected with a double click (single click can be turned on in the settings). Open the Object List (Ctrl+B) and edit it from there.
Lines disappear when I change timeframe
Their Visualization tab is limited to some timeframes. Tick “All timeframes” or the ones you need.
