How to log in to MT5: demo and live accounts

To connect, MT5 needs three things from your broker: your login (account number), your password and the name of the trade server. Demo and live accounts usually sit on different servers, for example “Broker-Demo” and “Broker-Live”.

Log in on the desktop platform

  1. Open the login window. In the File menu choose “Login to Trade Account”, or right-click “Accounts” in the Navigator window and pick the same command.
  2. Enter your details. Type your Login (account number) and Password, then choose the Server from the list exactly as written in your broker's email.
  3. Choose whether to save the password. Tick “Save password” only on your own computer.
  4. Confirm. Click OK. When connected, the account appears in the Navigator and the connection indicator in the bottom-right corner shows traffic instead of “No connection”.

Log in on Android

  1. Open account management. Open the side menu and tap “Manage Accounts”, then the “+” button.
  2. Find your broker. Choose to log in to an existing account and start typing your broker's name; results appear after a few letters. Select the right server.
  3. Sign in. Enter your login and password, choose whether to save the password, and tap “Login”.

Log in on iPhone

  1. Add the account. Go to Settings → New Account, search for your broker, choose the server, then enter your login and password and tap Sign in.

Open a demo account

  1. Request a demo. Most brokers open demo accounts from their website. On desktop you can also use File → Open an Account, choose the broker's demo server and fill in the form. Practise with a realistic balance, close to what you would deposit.

Common problems

Invalid account
Wrong login, password or server. Check you picked the demo server for a demo account (and live for live), retype the password and check that the account has not expired.
No connection
Check your internet connection and that the server name is correct; try rescanning servers.
Trading disabled after login
You may be logged in with the investor password, which is read-only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the master and investor password?

The master password allows trading. The investor password only lets you view the account, its positions and history.

Why do I get “Invalid account”?

The login, password and server do not match. The most common cause is choosing a live server for a demo account, or the reverse.

Can I use the same account on PC and phone?

Yes. Log in with the same details on each device; positions and history are stored on the broker's server.
